US generals expect Crimea to fall by summer

11.11 am: US Army General Ben Hodges expects Crimea to fall in the summer. He wrote on Twitter: “I predict that Putin will lose the war for Crimea (…) next summer.” He was responding to a tweet by political scientist Michael McFault, who said: “Putin lost the battle for Kyiv. He lost the battle for Kharkiv. He lost the battle for Kherson.” Then he asked, “What loses after that?” Read here what the fall of Crimea could mean.

Amnesty: Russian forces abducted civilians

10:32 am: According to Amnesty International, Russian forces have abducted Ukrainian civilians in recent months. They were taken to Russia or further to Russian controlled areas. According to a human rights report, children were also separated from their families. There are also incidents of arbitrary arrests, torture and other ill-treatment. All of this points to a deliberate Russian policy and systematic character, part of an all-out attack on civilians.

For the report, the agency interviewed 88 civilians from Kharkiv, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhia regions. Most respondents, especially those from Mariupol, described forced situations where they had virtually no choice but to go to Russia or other Russian-controlled territories. According to Amnesty, these are war crimes. International law prohibits individual and mass deportations of protected persons, such as civilians, from occupied territories.

“The list of war crimes committed by Russian forces in Ukraine is getting longer and longer,” said Janine Uhlmanczyk, Amnesty expert. Russia’s aggression since the start of the war, itself a crime under international law, has seen Russian troops indiscriminately attack residential areas, use banned cluster munitions and target civilians for assassination. Uhlmansiek called on Russia to immediately stop abductions from the occupied territories and release all those affected. Those responsible must be held accountable.

US: 200,000 soldiers killed or wounded in Ukraine war

2 o’clock: At least 100,000 troops have been killed and wounded in both Russia and Ukraine, according to a top US general. In a speech in New York, US Army General Mark Milley said, “We are dealing well with 100,000 Russian soldiers killed and wounded. That probably applies to Ukraine. There is a lot of humanitarian suffering.” Also, since the Russian offensive began in February, 40,000 Ukrainian civilians have died in the conflict.

Ukraine reports Russian attack with cluster munitions

12:30 am: Russia attacked the southern Ukrainian city of Kryvyi Rih on Wednesday evening. According to Ukraine’s military administration, numerous cartridge bombs were used along with cluster munitions from Russian rocket launchers. The public was urged to be especially careful not to set off small, cylindrical explosive devices.

Further south, Ukrainian troops advanced toward the city of Kherson. The Russian military leadership had earlier ordered a withdrawal from the city and the entire right bank of the Dnipro. Ukrainian media have reported the “liberation” of the towns of Pravdino and Kalinovskoye after intense fighting over the past few days. The Ukrainian invasion was preceded by the withdrawal of the Russians from the two cities, Ukrzynska Pravda reported.
