The salaries of MEPs are increasing at a significant rate

Due to high inflation, the salaries of EU civil servants may increase significantly. Von der Leyen would have received more than 2,000 euros.

The salaries of EU officials and members of the European Parliament will increase significantly. This is reported by the “Bild” newspaper and refers to an internal paper of the EU Commission’s budget director for the budget committee of the European Parliament. As things stand, the EU would increase wages by 6.9 percent. The adjustment applies retroactively to July 1, 2022.

According to the report, Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will receive an additional €2,015 in basic salary and EU commissioners will receive €1,643 more. MEPs’ allowance will be increased to 632 euros. Depending on the salary group, an EU civil servant’s salary increases between 210 and 1,460 euros per month.

In the case of EU salary increases, an automatic adjustment mechanism comes into play, which increases salaries in line with the rate of inflation. Inflation in the Eurozone recently hit record highs due to a sharp rise in fuel prices. Eurostat, the EU statistics authority, will present final figures on pay rises at the end of October. According to “Bild”, member states are reportedly resisting salary increases.
