At the beginning of the 2023 calendar year, handball fans from all over the world can look forward to an absolutely huge spectacle, because the 28th edition of the world championship is coming up. Sweden, where the reigning European handball champion comes from, and Poland were selected as host countries. While this is Sweden’s fifth tournament after 1954, 1967, 1993 and 2011, Poland will host World Cup finals for the first time ever. Poland offers four venues during the tournament – Katowice, Płock, Kraków and Gdańsk – while in Sweden the matches are played in five cities: Stockholm, Malmö, Gothenburg, Jönköping and Kristianstad.

The 2023 World Cup will open on January 11, 2023 and will last until the final in Stockholm on January 29, 2023. A total of 32 nations are taking part in the competition, which were divided into eight groups of four in the draw. The German national team was drawn into Group E, where the opponents are Qatar, Serbia and Algeria.

Handball World Cup 2023: date, dates, location

A group’s games all take place at the same location, with Germany playing Qatar on the 13th, Serbia on the 15th and Algeria on January 17th in Katowice, Poland. After the preliminary round, the teams that have qualified for the main round are determined.

After the preliminary round at the President’s Cup, the eight fourth-placed teams will play out their positions among themselves. This President’ Cup works as follows: In the first phase, two groups of four (Group I and Group II) are formed using the eight teams. The result of the placement round is then used after three rounds to determine the pairings for the placement games (for 25th, 27th, 29th and 31st place). The first of the two groups in the placement round will fight for 25th place, the two second for 27th place, the two third for 29th place and the two fourth for 31st place completed on January 25th.

So while the bottom of the group from the preliminary round is playing for places 25 to 32, the eight groups first, second and third place in the main round, for which four groups of six are formed. The results against the teams from the preliminary round, which also made it into the main round, are taken along. The game will be played from January 18th to 23rd.

The knockout phase begins on January 25 with the quarter-finals, the semi-finals are scheduled for January 27, and then the world champion will be crowned on January 29.

Handball World Cup 2023: broadcast on TV and live stream

Several providers are taking care of the transmission of the 2023 World Cup. All games with German participation are alternately broadcast on free TV ARD and in ZDF to see. The two public broadcasters also offer the matches in a free live stream sportschau.de and zdf.de on.
