The German record champions THW Kiel started the Champions League season with a befitting success. Coach Filip Jicha’s team beat the Norwegian champion Elverum Handball in their opening game in Group B by 36:26 (17:13).
The Norwegian backcourt giant Harald Reinkind (six goals) was the most successful thrower for the four-time Champions League winner, who celebrated a sovereign success overall even without the long-term injured stars Sander Sagosen and Hendrik Pekeler. Elverum was only able to keep the game open until just before half-time.
Kiel caught a tough group. Other opponents of THW include defending champion FC Barcelona, last year’s finalist Lomza Industria Kielce with national goalkeeper Andreas Wolff, Aalborg Handbold with superstar Mikkel Hansen and Hungary’s champion Pick Szeged. In his 25th participation in the Champions League, Kiel is aiming to reach the Final Four, which will take place on June 17th and 18th, 2023 in Cologne.
The German champion SC Magdeburg celebrates its comeback on the Champions League stage after a 16-year absence on Thursday (6.45 p.m. / DAZN) at Dinamo Bucharest. The most prominent opponent of the SCM in Group A is Paris St. Germain.
