That’s why Thiago is missing from the squad for the 2022 World Cup

Spain’s squad for the World Cup in Qatar is set, but the name of precious technician Thiago is missing from the list. Here’s the reason for Thiago’s absence from the World Cup.

A little more than a week to go until the World Cup kicks off in Qatar. 32 teams qualified for the most prestigious national team competition will compete for almost a month from November 20 for the world title. Including the Spanish national team, who lifted the trophy themselves once, in 2010 in South Africa. The Spaniards don’t have it easy in Group E because they have to hold their own against Germany, Costa Rica and Japan – and that without ex-Bayern star Thiago.

The midfield strategist is not in the 26-man squad announced by coach Luis Enrique on Friday.

Spain: That’s why Thiago is missing from the squad for the 2022 World Cup

It is not, as is often the case, an injury that prevents a star player like Thiago from participating in the World Cup, nor is it his age or his form. Thiago is – when he is fit – part of the permanent staff in central midfield at Jürgen Klopp’s Liverpool FC. Enrique simply chose other candidates.

But despite all the arguments that actually speak for Thiago, his elimination is actually not a surprise. Because the 31-year-old has not played a game for Furia Roja since the 2020 European Championship.

He joins compatriot Sergio Ramos, who was also not nominated. The centre-back may not be the youngest at 36, but he still plays an important role in Paris Saint-Germain’s defense at the moment, and his leadership qualities and World Cup experience (Ramos attended four World Cups from 2006 to 2018 part) can be useful.

From a sporting point of view, both non-nominations – both Thiagos and Ramos’ – cannot really be justified. Especially since Sergio Busquets is allowed to fly to Qatar, whose drop in performance is noticeable in the current season.
