Maximilian Arnold not nominated for the World Cup: “I’m very, very disappointed”

Midfielder Maximilian Arnold of VfL Wolfsburg has expressed his disappointment at not being considered for the World Cup in Qatar.

“I’m very, very disappointed. It took me a while to process the decision on Thursday,” said the 28-year-old in an interview on the club’s website. “I can’t blame myself for my performance. I think I could have added value for the national team because I have different skills and attributes. That’s why it was very disappointing.”

On the sidelines of the Bundesliga game, Wolfsburg got stuck at 1899 Hoffenheim sky again and asked how the conversation with national coach Hansi Flick went. “He didn’t exactly explain himself very well, and there wasn’t much to explain either,” said a frustrated Arnold.

VfL captain Arnold is having a strong season in seventh place in the table, which is why the three-time national player had hopes of being able to jump on the World Cup train. Arnold’s last international match was in November 2021, at the end of September he was still part of the squad for the Nations League games against Hungary (0-1) and England (3-3).

For the World Cup in Qatar, Flick chose Joshua Kimmich, Leon Goretzka (both FC Bayern) and İlkay Gündoğan (Manchester City) in central midfield.
