Louis van Gaal tells of strange scenes

Louis van Gaal, head coach of the Dutch national team, personally called all non-nominated players via video call before the announcement of his squad for the upcoming World Cup – and experienced strange situations.

“I saw some naked players because they were still in bed,” said the Oranje coach at a press conference on Friday.

He did not reveal any more details. Only that, despite the laughter, the decision to choose the squad was not easy for him: “I spent an hour and 45 minutes contacting the eleven players via Facetime. It wasn’t easy.”

Among others missing from the final squad of the Dutch, which was announced on Friday, is Ryan Gravenberch from FC Bayern Munich, Donyell Malen from Borussia Dortmund and goalkeeper Mark Flekken from SC Freiburg. The 26-man squad includes Matthijs de Ligt from the German record champions and Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer 04 Leverkusen.

Van Gaal sees the prospects of success as good: “We have a good chance of becoming world champions. But I also count Germany among the favourites”.

For the Netherlands, the tournament begins on November 21 with the opening duel against Senegal, followed by Ecuador (November 25) and Qatar (November 29) in Group A.
