Akbar Al Baker, CEO of Qatar Airways, has denounced reporting on Qatar in connection with criticism of the host country of the World Cup.
“We always rub salt in the wounds of our competitors and of course our opponents, as you can see from the negative media campaign against my beloved country Qatar,” Al Baker said at an opening ceremony of a new wing of Doha airport.
“People cannot accept that a small country like Qatar has won the greatest sporting event in the world,” added Al Baker.
Most recently, the statement by the Qatari World Cup ambassador Khalid Salman, homosexuality in a ZDF-Doku as “mental damage” had triggered a wave of outrage. The Gulf state has long been under massive criticism for human rights violations.
Qatar Airways is sleeve sponsor of FC Bayern Munich. It is unclear whether the partnership, which has also been heavily criticized by some fans, will be extended beyond the end of the contract next summer. Those responsible for Bayern had recently announced talks after the World Cup.
