Manchester United’s David de Gea apparently not on the 55 list

David de Gea will probably not travel to the World Cup in Qatar. The Manchester United goalkeeper is apparently missing from Spain’s provisional squad.

Spain national coach Luis Enrique will apparently not be using goalkeeper David de Gea for the upcoming World Cup in Qatar. Like the Spanish newspaper AS reported, the Manchester United goalkeeper is missing from the provisional 55-man squad of the 2010 champions.

Instead, five other goalkeepers are said to have made it onto the provisional list that had to be submitted to the world governing body FIFA in the run-up to the tournament. According to the report, these include Robert Sánchez Brighton & Hove Albion), Unai Simón (Athletic Bilbao) and David Raya (Brentford FC) as well as potential injury backups Kepa Arrizabalaga (Chelsea FC) and David Soria (Getafe FC).

Although de Gea is the undisputed number one in the Red Devils, the 31-year-old has been falling in Coach Enrique’s reputation for some time. The 45-time national player was last nominated for “Furia Roja” in November 2021, his last appearance for the Spanish national team was even longer ago. In October 2020, he scored in the 1-0 Nations League defeat in Ukraine.

De Gea made his international debut in June 2014 with a brief appearance in a friendly against El Salvador. At the subsequent World Cup in Brazil, he remained without a mission. His only two tournaments as a regular keeper were the 2016 European Championships and the 2018 World Cup, Spain was eliminated in the round of 16.
