FC Bayern Munich: Manuel Neuer is still out

FC Bayern and the DFB team have had to do without their captain for several weeks. Week after week, Manuel Neuer’s comeback seems to be further delayed. But what is the actual reason for his absence? And is the World Cup on the brink now? SPOX has the answers.

Manuel Neuer played his last competitive game on October 8th in Bayern’s 2-2 draw against Borussia Dortmund. Since then, substitute Sven Ulreich has stood between the goal posts – but for how long? Nobody can answer this question at the moment, and not even Neuer himself. The national goalkeeper is still suffering from a contusion in his shoulder joint, which he sustained in training at the beginning of October.

According to various media reports, the 36-year-old had to stop a training session again this week due to persistent complaints. FCB coach Julian Nagelsmann has now conceded the rumor again. Bayern’s CEO Oliver Kahn also tried to take the wind out of the sails of all World Cup worries on Tuesday. Neuer’s injury is certainly a “painful story, but nothing serious”. You just have to “wait and see how it develops from day to day.”

The World Cup in Qatar starts in less than four weeks. However, the training camp in neighboring Oman is scheduled to start on November 14th.

At the press conference on Friday, Bayern coach Nagelsmann also referred to the current fitness level of his regular keeper. He emphasized again that Neuer was not suffering from any structural injuries. He just needs more rest. However, he cannot say exactly how long the captain will continue to watch. “I don’t think he can’t play the World Cup,” said the 35-year-old. “But if he still has the pain in five weeks, then he won’t play it.”

It is now also clear that Neuer will not be in the squad or even in goal for Bayern, at least on Saturday against Mainz. From a German point of view, it is to be hoped that the former world goalkeeper will be fit again in time for the World Cup. The current situation evokes parallels to the years 2014 and 2018. Even then, shortly before the start of the World Championships, he suffered from various injuries. As is well known, however, he was ultimately back on the pitch on time.
