Schmidt wins first Clasico with Benfica

Coach Roger Schmidt and international Julian Draxler celebrated a landmark victory in their first Clasico with Portugal leaders Benfica Lisbon.

The record champions, who were outnumbered for more than an hour, won 1-0 (0-0) against constant rivals and pursuers FC Porto and are now six points ahead of Porto. Substitute Draxler, however, had to leave the field injured.

Rafa Silva struck in the 74th minute for Benfica, who won a competitive game against their arch-rivals for the first time since March 2019 and a nine-game losing streak.

In a tough match (eleven yellow cards, one yellow card) Porto lost Canadian international Stephen Eustaquio with a traffic light card in the 27th minute. The 2014 world champion Draxler, who only came into play in the second half, left the field in the 63rd minute. The 29-year-old was unable to earn the plus points he urgently needed for a World Cup nomination.
