Schalke legionnaire Leo Greiml injured his knee again

Austria’s Leo Greiml only recovered from his cruciate ligament tear during the course of the season. Now his neo-club Schalke 04 reports: Greiml has injured his knee again and has to go under the knife.

Almost exactly a year ago – on October 21, 2021 – Leo Greiml suffered a severe cruciate ligament injury. The 21-year-old had to watch for 252 days, did not extend his contract with SK Rapid and moved to Schalke 04 in the summer.

Most recently, the central defender played four Bundesliga games for the miners. Now the seven-time ÖFB-U21 team player injured himself again. Schalke 04 will have to do without Greiml until the end of the calendar year. The defender will undergo surgery on Friday for a meniscus injury.

“We are very sorry for Leo,” says sporting director Rouven Schröder. “He has fought back impressively after his cruciate ligament injury. This fighting attitude will now help him to return to the pitch healthy and as quickly as possible.”

With Greiml, the fourth Schalke central defender is already out. Marcin Kaminski (cut calf), Ibrahima Cissé (muscle injury) and Sepp van den Berg (ligament injury) will also be out of action until the end of the year. The same applies to midfielder Rodrigo Zalazar (broken metatarsal).
