DFB Cup, 2nd round – Hannover 96

Borussia Dortmund is in the round of 16 of the DFB Cup. BVB did not perform well in the second round at second division side Hannover 96, but won 2-0 (1-0). The round of 16 takes place on January 31st/January 1st. February and 7./8. February 2023.

  • An unfortunate own goal by Bright Arrey-Mbi gave BVB the lead (11′). Substitute Jude Bellingham added a penalty to make it 2-0 (70′). Karim Adeyemi saw the red card shortly before the end because of an emergency brake (86th).
  • Niklas Süle wore the captain’s armband for the first time in his twelfth competitive game for BVB.
  • For the first time this season, Bellingham did not start for Dortmund. Having previously played all competitive games over the full distance, the Englishman was rested for 62 minutes.
  • After a good hour, Dortmund’s Thomas Meunier had to be replaced after a duel with 96 captain Julian Börner.
  • Dortmund coach Edin Terzic won each of his first seven DFB Cup games, Pep Guardiola did that most recently (even won the first 9).

  • After the game, Emre Can thanked the outstanding Gregor Kobel. Both Dortmunders also commented on the criticism of Mats Hummels. Here’s the message.

Hannover 96 – BVB: The analysis

A flattering half-time lead for BVB, who were very lucky after just six minutes – once again after a set piece – and could thank Kobel, who reacted strongly, for not falling behind. Without being dominant, the guests had their best phase after the happy 1-0, when Moukoko in particular employed the 96 defense and Dortmund found their way behind the high-standing chain of Lower Saxony several times.

With more chances to score and duels won, Borussia’s lead has been okay so far. However, the game then took a turn, because Hannover showed a reaction and made it into the penalty area several times, especially on the left. Kobel had to save twice again (31st, 32nd). The early pressing by the 96ers resulted in several ball losses for BVB, who, not for the first time this season, lacked the necessary intensity in the game against the ball. ,

The tone of the second period was set early, because just 13 seconds after the restart, Can missed an own goal by an inch. In the 53rd minute, a simple shift was enough to expose Dortmund’s defense – but Weydandt missed from close range. BVB’s sluggishness when moving was not only evident in this scene.

By bringing in Bellingham, the Westphalians switched to 4-3-3, shortly afterwards Terzic brought in fresh wingers. A counterattack by the fresh legs finally ensured the decision in favor of BVB. Hannover stayed on the gas afterwards and continued to show increased commitment, which was far too seldom seen from Borussia. That was not an increase compared to the weak 0: 2 at Union Berlin on Sunday.
