Despite winning the Yashin Trophy, Thibaut Courtois reacted with dissatisfaction to being chosen for the Ballon d’Or. The reason for this was his placement.
Talking to the Spanish TV channel RTVE said the Real Madrid goalkeeper: “Of course Karim deserves it, we’re happy and we’re all okay with that. But after a year of you winning the Champions League and the league as a goalkeeper, your team won the Champions League final thanks to your saves wins – and then you only finish seventh?”
The Belgian continued: “It means a lot that the goalkeepers don’t pick up the votes. But you can understand it: there aren’t any defenders in the top ten either.”
