When talking about the Ballon d’Or, people like to talk about the election for world footballer, because the best player of the past year – today at the Ballon d’Or 2022 the best player of the past season 2021/22 – with the golden trophy is rewarded. Strictly speaking, however, these are now two different things.
Between 2010 and 2015, FIFA and the French football magazine France Football jointly organized the Ballon d’Or under the name “FIFA Ballon d’Or”. Prior to 2010, it had the World Player of the Year award from FIFA and from France Football given the Golden Ball, which at that time was only intended for the strongest professional in Europe until 2007.
In 2016, FIFA and France Football parted ways, which means that since then they have each given their own prizes: FIFA is again organizing the world footballer’s election, whereas France Football awarded the Ballon d’Or. Again to understand: Despite this split, both elections are ultimately about choosing the world’s best footballer. Important to know: the Ballon d’Or is considered the even more prestigious award in the football world.

It may well be that there are different winners in the world footballer election and the Ballon d’Or for a year. The electoral rules are different.
Ballon d’Or: From the editors of France Football a list of 30 footballers is first drawn up. This is presented by a total of 100 journalists from the top 100 countries in the FIFA world rankings. They form the jury and can ultimately award five votes each: six points for the best, four for the second best, three for the third best, two for the fourth best and one point for what they think is the fifth best actor of the year. The player with the most points at the end wins. In the event of a possible tie, which professional has been placed first more often counts.
