Manchester United’s England international Mason Greenwood has been charged with attempted rape, intentional bodily harm and coercion. This was announced by the British public prosecutor on Saturday. Greenwood had previously been arrested for violating his bail conditions.
“The Crown Prosecution Service has authorized Greater Manchester Police to charge Mason Greenwood, 21, with attempted rape, domination and coercion and assault,” Assistant Attorney General Janet Potter said. Greenwood is due to appear before Salford Magistrates Court on Monday.
The 21-year-old was first arrested in January on serious allegations of violence and abuse and death threats against his then-girlfriend. He was released on bail three days later.
At the time, his partner had published pictures on Instagram showing injuries. There was also audio recordings of Greenwood allegedly attempting to force the woman into sexual activity. The posts were later deleted.
Manchester United then released the attacker from training and games “until further notice” and has not used him since.
