Squad at the 2022 World Cup: candidates, failures, injuries, announcement

The 2022 World Cup in Qatar is getting closer by the day, and with it the day when the squad for the tournament has to be announced. Who are the candidates in the DFB team, who is injured and when will the final announcement be made? SPOX has the answers.

Germany – squad at the 2022 World Cup: candidates, failures, injuries, announcement

For the first time in a long time, Joachim Löw will not accompany the German national team as coach at a major tournament. His former assistant coach Hansi Flick has now taken over the reins. The 57-year-old will have a say in the announcement of the World Cup squad.

There’s still time until then, but we’re still looking at potential candidates, failures, injuries and will tell you when the final squad for the World Cup will be announced.

The question seems to have been largely answered in goal. Manuel Neuer, who was missing against Hungary and England due to the corona virus, is still firmly in the saddle at the age of 36 and will contest the tournament as number one. With Marc-André ter Stegen there is probably no better number two in any country. Kevin Trapp will probably have to line up behind the two.

The central defense will most likely be Niklas Süle and Antonio Rüdiger, in the case of a back three Matthias Ginter, Nico Schlotterbeck, Armel Bella-Kotchap, Jonathan Tah or even Mats Hummels would also be candidates for the starting XI. Flick has Benjamin Henrichs and Thilo Kehrer available on the right, David Raum probably has the best cards on the left.

During Flick’s time at Bayern, the defensive midfield duo consisting of Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka was indispensable, but things could look different in the national team this time. Next to Kimmich, Ilkay Gündogan is a hot candidate for the starting eleven. Nevertheless, Goretzka is guaranteed a place in the 26-man squad. Other midfielders are Thomas Müller, Jamal Musiala and Kai Havertz. Maximilian Arnold from VfL Wolfsburg has been called up for the last two internationals and could also be in Qatar. In addition to Leroy Sané, Serge Gnabry, there will probably also be Robin Gosens and Jonas Hofmann on the outside positions. In the past, Gosens and Hofmann were used on the defensive flanks.

Up front, Flick will mainly rely on Timo Werner, Lukas Nmecha is also an option. There is also speculation about other strikers like Niclas Füllkrug.

With Marco Reus and Florian Wirtz, two players are currently not fit for the World Cup, but they could still be. Reus suffered a torn ligament in his ankle a week and a half ago in the Revierderby against FC Schalke 04, and a timely recovery is very likely. The situation is similar for Wirtz, who is scheduled to return to team training at Bayer Leverkusen in mid-October after tearing his cruciate ligament. According to the Sports picture Flick could nominate the 19-year-old even if he didn’t regularly play the full distance for the Werkself.

Each nation can nominate 26 players for the World Cup in Qatar. Before that, however, a pre-selection of 50 players must be made. This one is supposed to be like that picture reported to take place no later than October 21.
