FC Barcelona: Koeman hands out against Laporta

Ronald Koeman has again dealt against his ex-club FC Barcelona and particularly criticized President Joan Laporta for his transfer policy.

The 59-year-old told the Dutch newspaper AD: “I tried to sign Wijnaldum. But I failed because the president wanted to annoy me more than to get the player. That delayed the operation. And that’s why he decided to go to PSG. Otherwise he would have played at the Camp Nou.”

The Spanish Mundo Deportivo reinforces Koeman’s argument that he was annoyed by quoting an earlier statement from Wijnaldum: “We negotiated with Barcelona for weeks but the club didn’t take the decisive step. Paris Saint-Germain came, they were quicker and more determined. It It was difficult to turn Barça down because they were one of the first clubs to be interested in me and they are one of the big clubs, but I’m happy with my decision,” said the 31-year-old.

Wijnaldum moved from Liverpool to Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer in 2021, but was not really able to assert himself there. In the meantime, the midfield strategist has been drawn to AS Roma on loan, where he has only played twelve minutes due to injury.

Koeman was sacked at Barça in October 2021, and since then he has often made critical statements about the Catalans. After the World Cup in Qatar he will take over the Dutch national team again.
