WM – Flick sharply criticizes: “A lot of things are obviously wrong”

Two months before the start of the controversial World Cup in Qatar (November 20 to December 18), national coach Hansi Flick condemned the awarding of the tournament to the emirate with unprecedented sharpness. The question of the correctness of the World Cup award for Qatar “should have been answered much earlier – with a no!” said Flick in an interview with the Süddeutsche Zeitung (Tuesday edition).

The 57-year-old left no doubts about his support for criticism of the conditions in the country of the World Cup hosts and the decision of the world association FIFA to host the tournament in the desert state: “The fact that in Qatar when it comes to human rights, when it comes to sustainability, a lot is not right, it’s obvious.”

In the years of debate about the World Cup finals in golf at the DFB, no member has positioned himself as clearly as Flick has towards the hosts. Managing Director Oliver Bierhoff packed the question “How could FIFA award the World Cup to this country?” his skepticism, and the head of the association, Bernd Neuendorf, described the award procedure as “questionable” before his trip to Qatar with Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser, which was planned for October.

Flick had also only approached the topic at the beginning of the week and only regretted in August “that this tournament will not be a World Cup for the fans”. Flick said he had many acquaintances a month ago to justify his stance “who would like to fly to Qatar, but for a variety of reasons refrain from doing so”. They cannot afford the massive prices, the situation for homosexuals, for example, is unacceptable, and there are human rights violations because minorities are excluded.

His clear statements about the situation in Qatar should also strengthen Flick’s credibility. In any case, the successor to world champion maker Joachim Löw does not want to be suspected of self-portrayal: “I am,” recalled the native of Heidelberg SZ-Interview, “even as a head coach at Bayern Munich, it was good to behave the way I am.”

Hansi Flick: “You’re happy when the squad is bigger.”

Accordingly, the former professional finds his official title “Bundestrainer” uncomfortable. “I don’t like the word that much,” said Flick: “It sounds so big, as if who knows who…” He wanted to be called “simply Hansi Flick”.

In terms of sport, the DFB head coach for the World Cup decided before the Nations League games on Friday in Leipzig against Hungary and three days later in London against England to use the first opportunity to nominate 26 instead of just 23 players as before. “I will make use of it. We experienced at the women’s European Championship how quickly corona failures can occur. You’re happy when the squad is wider.”
