Paul Pogba’s older brother Mathias has been arrested by French police. The 32-year-old turned himself in on Wednesday and is now in custody alongside three other suspects, according to investigators.
Specifically, Mathias Pogba is accused of armed extortion, extortion in an organized gang and involvement in a criminal organization.
At the end of August he published a video in which he announced “explosive” revelations about Paul Pogba. In a statement, he reported “threats and attempted blackmail” by a gang. Juventus star Paul Pogba filed a blackmail lawsuit in June.
According to the latest investigation, Mathias is said to have demanded a double-digit million amount from his brother. The three other suspects are said to be his friends or acquaintances.
What the announced revelations are supposed to be about is still unclear. In response to the video, Paul Pogba said in a statement that his brother’s actions were “not a surprise”. It would be “in line with previous threats and attempts at blackmail”.
Like the French TV station France Info reported, the 2018 world champion is said to have already testified to the police against his older brother. His group had demanded 13 million euros for “favours” that were not described in detail. There were also several attempts at intimidation. At the beginning of September, investigations were finally launched by the Paris public prosecutor’s office.
According to Yassine Bouzrou, lawyer for Mathias Pogba, his client turned himself in to make a statement. He “emphatically” rejects his brother’s allegations.
