Gernot Trauner remembers the cancellation of Sturm Graz: “I was very surprised”

Gernot Trauner is one of the best central defenders in the Eredivisie. Just a few years ago, SK Sturm gave the Feyenoord defense chief a painful rejection.

In the summer of 2021, Gernot Trauner switched from LASK to Feyenoord Rotterdam for around one million euros. Since then, the 30-year-old has been a top performer in the Eredivisie and an Austrian international.

A few years ago, however, his career was not quite so rosy. In 2017, Trauner completed a medical check at SK Sturm – but this was negative.

“My contract in Ried expired at the time. Sturm was an issue and it was about a preliminary medical examination. Sturm wanted to do it that way and only then conduct detailed contract negotiations,” remembers Trauner in an interview with the Upper Austrian news.

Trauner: “Storm is an attractive address”

Trauner continues: “At that time there were also other interested parties such as LASK. So the transfer wasn’t through yet. The fact that Sturm actually gave a medical veto because of my hip history surprised me at the time and I never would have expected it . It was known that I had had an operation beforehand, and I have never had any health problems in this regard to date.”

Finally, the defender, who will meet Graz in the Europa League on Thursday, signed with LASK and made enormous strides in performance: “It could have been worse. I generally don’t regret anything in life, but it would also have been in the event of a commitment from Sturm I can run excellently. Sturm is an attractive address for every footballer in Austria with the fans and the environment in which work is highly professional.”
