Robert Lewandowski applauded by Bayern fans

Ex-goal scorer Robert Lewandowski was mostly applauded by FC Bayern fans when he returned to Munich. When the 34-year-old walked into the Allianz Arena with FC Barcelona to warm up on Tuesday evening, he was explicitly welcomed by the stadium announcer. Only a few Munich supporters whistled, the majority of the 75,000 spectators applauded.

Lewandowski’s change in the summer had caused a lot of fuss – but Thomas Müller had hoped for a respectful reception from the Pole before the explosive duel.

“Lewy has done a great deal for the club. Of course, as a former player at these big titles, you wish that the reception would be warm,” said Müller. Lewandowski switched to Barcelona in the summer after weeks of trouble for 45 million euros (plus bonuses).

Even the former Munich sports director Matthias Sammer had appealed to the fairness of Bayern fans. “I expect respect for him. He deserves it,” said Prime-Expert Sammer. Lewandowski had “achieved extraordinary things and made history” at Bayern Munich.
