Until just before the transfer window closed, SSC Napoli was considered a hot candidate for a commitment from Cristiano Ronaldo. Sports director Cristiano Giuntoli has now confirmed that the Portuguese have never been seriously considered.
Giuntoli said in an interview with the that there was speculation about a transfer of Ronaldo to Serie A Corriere dello Sport as a tactic: “In the transfer market we pretend that we talk to everyone and sometimes we really do. But we wanted to invest in a young team”.
The Napoli sports director had previously confirmed that Ronaldo had not really been considered as a potential newcomer. “We never really talked about Ronaldo. In football you don’t get ahead with ifs and buts. We are happy with the squad we have and we are confident that we have a competitive side,” said Giuntoli.
According to media reports, Ronaldo absolutely wanted to leave Manchester United in the summer. His advisor Jorge Mendes offered the 37-year-old to play at some top European clubs, including Chelsea, Sporting, Atlético Madrid, Bayern Munich, BVB and Naples. However, nobody wanted to sign the Portuguese.
So Ronaldo has to stay with the Red Devils at least until the winter transfer window. His contract with the PL club is until 2023.
