FC Barcelona is also investing in its women’s team and, according to media reports, paid the world record fee of around 460,000 euros for English European champion Keira Walsh.
Like her national team colleague Lucy Bronze, Walsh is moving from top English club Manchester City to Barca, replacing former record holder Pernille Harder.
The Danish national player is said to have cost up to 350,000 euros when she was transferred from VfL Wolfsburg to Chelsea two years ago. Harder was happy to give up the record. “It’s good for women’s football that the money is rolling,” she said.
Walsh is to replace world footballer Alexia Putellas in Barcelona, who tore a cruciate ligament shortly before the European Championship. The 25-year-old midfielder was voted player of the game in the Lionesses’ final triumph over Germany (2-1 aet). She played her 50th international match on Tuesday at the end of the World Cup qualifier against Luxembourg (10-0).
