The winning streak continues: After the fuss about Schalke’s flirt with coach Thomas Reis, VfL Bochum also lost the landmark home game against newly promoted Werder Bremen 0-2 (0-0) and remain bottom of the Bundesliga table without a point. Returnees Werder, on the other hand, are on target with eight points from five games in midfield after Niclas Füllkrug’s brace (86’/90′ + 2′, penalty kick).
The Bochumers continue to have their backs to the wall – and Reis, who is said to have negotiated with rivals Schalke 04 in the summer, is under particular observation. Next Saturday (6.30 p.m. / Sky) the two neighbors will meet directly in the fight against relegation. Two weeks after the 3-2 win at Borussia Dortmund, Bremen celebrated their second away win in the Ruhr area.
Reis, who denied any talks with Schalke on Thursday, was greeted with applause. Instead of verbal attacks against the promotion coach, who also managed to stay up in the league, there were abusive songs against the neighbors from Gelsenkirchen.
Even if nobody at VfL wanted to speak of an ultimatum, the 48-year-old was under enormous pressure for the first time as Bochum coach. Reis himself had said that what happened after the game interested him “a little”. The new sports director Patrick Fabian, who had played with Reis at VfL, took his place on the Bochum bench for the first time.
Bremen: Filling jug double pack ensures ecstasy
With the unrestricted support of their fans behind them, Bochum started offensively: Takuma Asano tested Werder goalkeeper Jiri Pavlenka after just 44 seconds, a minute later Kevin Stöger narrowly missed the far corner with a flick. Bremen’s defence, one of the shakiest in the league with ten goals conceded in the first four games, initially had major problems.
It took the guests a good 20 minutes to get into the game. After a failed defensive action by Bochum, Niclas Füllkrug suddenly appeared alone in front of the goal, but was denied by goalkeeper Manuel Riemann (22nd). His strike partner Marvin Ducksch couldn’t get past the VfL goalkeeper either (26′). Werder became more and more dominant, combined fluidly, the pressure on the decimated Bochum defense increased.
Bremen were unlucky when Niklas Schmidt hit the post with a free kick from almost 30 meters (41′). On the other side, Philipp Förster failed at Pavlenka (44th). Werder remained more determined after the change of sides – Ducksch missed two chances within a minute (50th/51st).
Bochum tried to fight back with fighting means – still tirelessly cheered on by 25,000 fans, who already cheered when Simon Zoller (62nd) and Anthony Losilla (70th) had chances. It got really loud in the 81st minute, but substitute Philipp Hofmann handed the ball over the line. Shortly thereafter, Werder countered first-class.
