Julian Draxler becomes an eagle

Julian Draxler managed to break away from French champions Paris Saint-Germain at the last second. The 28-year-old joined Benfica just before the transfer window closed, preserving his slim chance of a place in Germany’s World Cup squad. The attacking midfielder is on loan at the top Portuguese club coached by Roger Schmidt until the end of the season.

In Group H of the Champions League, he will be reunited with his home club on October 5th. Draxler recently played no role at all in the Paris star ensemble. As one of four professionals, he was not allowed to take the preparatory trip to Japan and had no place in the squad on the first few days of the game. The French media even recently speculated about a deportation to the second team of PSG, which plays in the fifth division.

Participation in the World Cup in Qatar would have been ruled out, game practice at Benfica should now open the door again. Under national coach Hansi Flick, the 58-time national player was only invited to the international match in March, in June he had to cancel on his own accord due to a knee injury. Draxler’s contract in Paris runs until 2024, in 2017 he moved from Wolfsburg to the Seine.

Benfica also signed former Bundesliga professional John Anthony Brooks (Hertha BSC, VfL Wolfsburg), who was recently without a club. The US international signed until the summer of 2023.
