For the first time in history, not only four, but even five Bundesliga teams will take part in the Champions League. The reason: Eintracht Frankfurt. With the victory in the Europa League final last season, the SBU automatically qualified for the European premier class. The team of coach Oliver Glasner thus complements the Bundesliga quartet with FC Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, RB Leipzig and Bayer Leverkusen.

However, the big question for Hessen this year is: To what extent will you be competitive? After all, with Filip Kostic, the “Player of the Year” of the past Europa League season, and defense chief Martin Hinteregger, two essential pillars of success have been lost. On the other hand, there were hardly any additions. The biggest name in the new squad: World Cup hero Mario Götze. The now 30-year-old switched to the Main for a bargain price of four million euros.

The start of the new Bundesliga season could have gone better. After three match days, Eintracht has only two points. The 1: 6 swatter in the opening game against Bayern got stuck. However: Frankfurt already had its problems on national territory last season, but in Europe they climbed to the top. It is possible that this season will be similar.

Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League: Group opponents

Compared to the other German teams in the competition, Eintracht was quite fortunate. The reigning Europa League winners will face Tottenham Hotspur, Olympique Marseille and Sporting Lisbon in the group stage. The latter team in particular will still be remembered by some German football fans. The Portuguese only eliminated BVB from the Champions League last season. In the direct duel for second place, the SCP surprisingly won 3:1.

All in all, Frankfurt’s sports director Markus Krösche is very positive about the challenge: “We have been drawn into a sporty and highly attractive group,” he stated after the draw. “We look forward to magical nights with our fans!” he continued. The goal is of course to spend the winter in Europe.
