CAS decides in favor of Nantes

The Court of Arbitration for Sport has dismissed an appeal by the Welsh football club Cardiff City against the payment of the first installment of the transfer fee for the Argentine footballer Emiliano Sala who died in a plane crash. The CAS announced this on Friday, almost three and a half years after the tragic accident.

The case involved six million euros that Cardiff owed to FC Nantes. Overall, the clubs had agreed on a transfer fee of 17 million euros. Two days after signing the contract, Sala’s machine crashed in the English Channel, and since then there has been disagreement between the clubs about the financial consequences.

After Cardiff refused to pay the amount, Nantes filed a lawsuit. World governing body FIFA ruled in favor of the French and instructed the Welsh to transfer the first tranche. Cardiff, in turn, took the case to the CAS, and processing was delayed due to the corona pandemic.
