Samuel Umtiti joins US Lecce

After several months of tough negotiations, FC Barcelona is getting rid of defender Samuel Umtiti. The Catalans still don’t save a lot of money.

Defender Samuel Umtiti leaves FC Barcelona. As the Catalans confirmed on Thursday, the 28-year-old Frenchman will be loaned out to Italian top-flight club US Lecce for a year. A move has been in the air for a long time, with Barca president Joan Laporta even saying at the beginning of August that it was “time for Umtiti to go”.

The centre-back’s loan to the Serie A promoted team runs until June 30, 2023, the agreement includes, according to information from SPOX and GOAL no purchase option for the Italians. The mandatory medical check of the 28-year-old is still pending.

FC Barcelona barely saves money with Umtiti transfer

With Samuel Umtiti, a candidate from the long list of Catalans is leaving the club. The goal behind it is clear: Barcelona have to earn money with transfers, which is urgently needed – for example to register new signing Joules Koundé for La Liga games.

According to information from GOAL and SPOX the club hardly saves any money with the Umtiti loan. Lecce only pays ten percent of the defender’s salary, with the Catalans continuing to pay the rest. Depending on how many games Umtiti plays for his new club, Barcelona could generate income from bonus payments.

FC Barcelona: Umtiti voluntarily waived salary

Umtiti’s contract with FC Barcelona runs until 2026 after both parties agreed to an extension earlier this year. The defender’s working paper originally ran until 2023, and he earned a reported twelve million euros a year.

In order to save money, Umtiti’s salary was extended to several years, according to the club. In addition, the 28-year-old is said to have given up ten percent of his annual salary.
