Russell Westbrook, the sixth man with the Los Angeles Lakers?

Russell Westbrook was scheduled to be tested as a sixth man against the Sacramento Kings, but the Los Angeles Lakers point guard was injured early on. Head coach Darvin Ham defended his decision.

“It’s not a demotion, it’s a realignment,” coach Ham said before the game of his decision to take Westbrook off the bench against the Kings. There had been speculation about this in recent weeks, but in the end Westbrook always started.

The experiment was short-lived, however, as the 33-year-old suffered a thigh problem and was eliminated in the first quarter. It’s not clear how the injury occurred, but manager Ham wasn’t too concerned. Westbrook ran out of points in his five minutes of action.

Dennis Schröder (finger) and Anthony Davis (back) also didn’t make the trip to Sacramento, with Davis it was just a precautionary measure. The Big Man should be able to play the season opener with the Golden State Warriors on Wednesday night.

Ham would not reveal whether Westbrook will return to action as a sixth man. It’s not new territory for the playmaker, but Westbrook has only come off the bench in 17 games (of 1,021) in his career. However, this all happened in Westbrook’s 2008-09 rookie season.
