Hardly anyone expected this: The Cleveland Cavaliers traded Donovan Mitchell from the Utah Jazz.
This is reported by Adrian Wojnarowski (ESPN). Consequently, the All-Star will play for the Ohio team in the future.
The deal includes Lauri Markkanen, Collin Sexton, rookie Ochai Agbaji, plus three unprotected first-round picks and two possible trades from picks moving to Utah. Sexton is a sign-and-trade, and Wojnarowski said the restricted free agent has agreed to a new contract with Utah.
Charania of Sham (the athletic) According to the Jazz, Sexton will receive $72 million over four years.
Mitchell has generally been associated with the New York Knicks and Miami Heat, but talks between the Knicks and Jazz appear to have stalled this past week. Now the Cavs have apparently seized this opportunity for themselves.
Utah has now traded its two stars from the last few years, Rudy Gobert having already said goodbye to Minnesota. The Salt Lake City team is probably completely geared toward rebuilding.
